The graphics are more or less untouched from the famicom version, and are basic even for famicom standards. While passable for the late 1980’s, the GBA port really isn’t a good introduction for a newcomer to the series in 2003. While these changes are improvements, they are still minor all things considered. While these additions do make the GBA version the definitive version of Mother 1 to play, it’s still very disappointing for a game re-released in 2003. The GBA version made some changes from the original, it added the light effects whenever you’re learning a new melody from the unreleased prototype, it added in a proper ending also introduced in the prototype, different menu options allowing you to toggle the message speed with ease, a multi-purpose check button for items and npc’s, a run button, bug fixes, and the simplification of certain dungeons.

Come 2003, and we get a port of it along with a port of its sequel on the same GBA cartridge. Mother 1, a simple little game with lot’s of charm released in 1989 for the Famicom.
